1st Lamaload Dana handled by Vic Barlow (Lab) winning The Gossmount Trophy presented by Kev and Jan Marriott and The Hawkslow Trophy (for the 2nd year running) presented by Sally Antram..COM. Hamford Wig handled by David Brown. (Lab)Gun's Choice. Middlegate Winter of Humbershot handled by John Day (Lab) winning The Coomberry Trophy presented by Steve and Angie Lomas. We
were short of a couple of grounds this season for our Retriever Trials
which is why this trial and the January Novice were scheduled later
than we would have liked. Better late than never though, as the saying
goes, and Radbourne proved to be a fantastic ground for our All Aged
Stake. We kept it down to 12 dogs as this was our first visit but we
could easily have run 14 or, knowing what we know now, even 16.
We were able to walk-up right from the start and the first field was some weathered fodder beat. We'd only walked a few yards when a Cock, flushed from a hedgerow by a Spaniel, was shot on the left. Temptations were too strong however, for the Spaniel, and he ran in, but he was re-called before he got anywhere near the bird, which ran about 50 yards up the hedgerow. Ted Fitzjohn, running number 3 with Alpel Mackerson was sent and sadly made nothing of it. Shelia Suzuki, backing up with Staftly Indiana faired no better. Dave Probert, judging with Vicky Stanley decided not to offer the bird and both dogs were lost as it was easily picked by hand. Oh dear! Not a good start. Things improved after this with Sue Berman's Suthcharic Inti and Anna Licciardi's Golden Granite both picking Rabbits smartly. Anna's second retrieve was a Woodcock which dropped over a hedge about 40 yards in front into more fodder beat. I'm guessing that Anna wished she was somewhere else at this point but after a couple of "Backs" her Yellow was back with the bird. The First Round progressed well with good work from Vic Barlow's Lamaload Dana, Claire Raymond's Levenghyl Beetle, Sally Antram's Peanut Storm at Hawkslow and Craig Horwill's Garicmoor Grouse. Criag's second retrieve was 4th dog down on a Hen which dropped about 40 yards behind the line. The first 3 dogs had honoured the fall but failed to take the line of only about 10 yards to where the bird had tucked up. Grouse stepped up to the plate and put 3 dogs out of the Stake! Walking on in yet another field of roots saw some good shooting and varied dog work as we progressed into the second round. Kate Smith, judging on the right, was sending her dogs as our "A" Panel, Derek Capel watched. It was pleasing to see the Judges "Judging" whilst the Dove Valley Stewards ran the Trial. As we made our way to lunch, a Rabbit was shot on the right and 2 dogs were tried across the line. Neither one made the area and were elimimated. The morning's session had seen some good dog work and excellent shooting but Trialling being what it is, only 3 dogs survived for the final drive after lunch. Head Keeper Philip Chaffey put the guns out on drilling for the drive from a spinney. During the drive, Lamaload Dana was sent for a long Hen which made it to a rough, wide strip of white grass about 100 yards behind the line and consolidated her lead with a tidy, if slightly handler assisted find. Long retrieves of Pheasant and Partridge for David Brown and John Day and a last Partridge for Vic brought the Trial to a close but the Gun's wanted more so we finished with a cracking drive from a woodland strip. An excellent Trial on a new ground for Dove Valley. Hopefully, we'll be back next season. |
