Unfortunately, Prof. Simon Allison was unable to fulfil his engagement as our A panel judge but we were very grateful to Paul Rawlings for stepping in to take his place at very short notice. Once again, Mick Prince, the Game Keeper and our Steward of the Beat gave us a very good trial and we really appreciate the interest he takes and the effort and time he expends to enable us to have a trial on this lovely estate. The standards were very high for novice dogs and the little cockers had a wide variety of ground to hunt, ranging from game crop, through spinney and woodland, roots, reeds and marsh, open bracken and brambles and back into woodland. They coped very well with it all and, as our non-panel judge Mr Martin Deacon said, there were some very challenging retrieves on dead birds and runners. At one stage in the trial the cockers worked through a game crop with a field of leeks to their left and although the guns tried to avoid dropping birds into the leeks, it was unavoidable at times, and there were several very good retrieves from the crop. Awards were made to all four places as well as two Certificates of Merit. As well as taking the Winner’s cup, The Ormewood Trophy, presented by Paul Rawlings, CAMERON TRAIN of ROANLODGE handled by Mr Chris Wadsworth, was also awarded the Premium Pets Trophy for the Best Hunting Spaniel and the Dove Valley Plate for the Guns’ choice.
