Our 49th Field Trial Meeting was a Novice Stake for 16 AV Spaniels and was held at the Longner Estate near to Shrewsbury by the kind invitation of Mr. Andrew Bailey who was our Steward of the Beat. This was our second Spaniel trial to be held here and we were honoured to have a very special trophy, specific to the trial at Longner, THE TASCO TROPHY presented by the Longner Estate and the Wauchope family for the Best Retrieve of the Day in memory of Mary Rountree. Andrew and his keeper, Rob Edwards (known to everyone as Blackie) provided us with some excellent ground. We were favoured by a dry, warm day and did not stop for lunch. We started the trial in a long strip of wood before moving over to the large Oaks Wood where we finished the trial in good daylight. Our Judges were Mr. Keith Carter and Mr. Keith Onions, and Keith Carter commented at the end of the trial that the standard of dogs had been very high with several of the runners being capable of going on to Open Status. Most dogs went on to compete in the second round and it was good to see so many dogs working well. After their deliberations, the judges called No. 7, Mr Satchwell’s  ESS dog, CLARBURGH SCOTTIE at FOLLYVIEW and No. 5, Mr Frost’s ESS bitch, CHURCHVIEW ABS for quite a lengthy run off, before the field returned to their vehicles to await the results. Mr Satchwell’s dog CLARBURGH SCOTTIE at FOLLYVIEW was given first place as well as being awarded the trophy for the Best Hunting Spaniel. Mr Frost’s CHURCHVIEW ABS was awarded second position, with third and fourth being awarded respectively to Mr F.A. Wilson’s ESS BUCCLEUTH GLEN and Mr K Walker’s ESS SILKSDOMINO SODA. The Guns eyes were caught by Mr Chris Wadsworth’s little cocker dog, CAMERON TRAIN of ROANLODGE and elected for him to receive the Guns Choice award, while Guns and Judges noted a particularly good retrieve and selected Mr G Dizenzo’s ESS dog JORDANS TIP to receive the TASCO TROPHY for the Best Retrieve of the Day. Certificates of Merit were awarded to Mr Sexton’s ESS TESTWAY TORNADO, Miss Hadfield’s ESS MOORVIEW MAISIE,  Mr G Dizenzo's JORDAN’S TIP, Mr Kelsall’s ESS STREANLEA AYA and Mr Sexton’s Cocker HOLLYGATE BROOKSBY BROOK who ran at No. 13 after a late withdrawal by the 1st reserve.
